7 Foolproof Video Testimonial Questions

Video testimonialsVideo testimonials are an important way to provide credibility, because they allow prospects to see your company and your products through the eyes of a peer, not a salesperson. But how do you make them? What should you ask?

Here’s a list of foolproof questions you can ask your happy customers on camera, to create powerful and effective video testimonials.

  1. Please tell us your name, title, and the company you work for, and then tell us a little bit about your company – what your product or service is, who your customers are, what’s special about what you do.
  2. What was the problem you were having before you started using our product/service?
  3. How did that problem impact your business? Please be as specific as possible.
  4. What other solutions did you try before you became our client?
  5. How effective is our product/service at solving the problem?Video testimonial graphic 2 copyPlease be as specific as possible.
  6. What do you find most beneficial about our product/service?
  7. What do you find most beneficial about working with our company?

Different people have different styles on-camera. Some of your happy clients may like to give long answers. Don’t be shy about thanking them for their answer, and then asking them to answer the question again but this time by summarizing what they just said.

Other clients may be uncomfortable on-camera, and give answers that are too short. One way around this is to ask them to put the question in the answer (How was poor communication impacting your business? The problem of poor communication was impacting our business in a couple different ways ...).

You can also ask follow-up, open-ended questions that will help them expand their answers. For example: "What do you mean?" and "Can you give me an example?" and "How was that working for you?"

Remember that your happy customers are probably a little uncomfortable on camera, so do your best to reassure them that they're doing a great job, and remember to tell them more than once how grateful you are that they've agreed to make a video testimonial for you.

After the shoot, think about how you will structure your video testimonials. Editing your video in a linear fashion, by giving your client’s answers in the order the questions were asked, may not be the best way to create your testimonial. Instead, think about how to move topics around to make the end product more interesting, and more functional. For example, you may want to take the last sentence your happy customer said and put it right up front.

Once you’ve created your testimonials, don’t just park them on your website. Use them in as many different ways you can think of – because they are highly effective ambassadors for your business. So put your video testimonials to work!
